The Upper Limay is one of Patagonia’s most productive trout rivers, prized for exceptional trout size and a rich forage base that includes native freshwater crustaceans like pancoras (freshwater crabs) and Samastacus crayfish — food sources that give this river characteristics found nowhere else in the region.

The river is divided into four floatable sections, each stretching six to nine miles. While the sections share a common character, each has its own structure and demands its own approach. Depending on the time of season, certain stretches fish better than others, and trout may be found holding deep, sitting shallow, or keyed into an active insect hatch — but every section holds the potential for a memorable day, and in every drift lies the chance of hooking the fish of a lifetime.

The scenery matches the fishing. As the river winds along its course, the landscape shifts from the snow-capped Andes to the open expanse of the Patagonian steppe, framing the experience as unforgettable as the fishing itself.

Fishing changes with the season. In midsummer, the Limay can produce excellent dry-fly action — large foamy terrestrials like Fat Alberts draw aggressive strikes, alongside more delicate patterns for selective risers. But this is above all a streamer river, where big flies fished with purpose offer the best shot at a true trophy trout. Guides adjust gear and technique throughout the season to match conditions and put anglers on fish.

This is a stretch of water every fly angler should experience at least once — and one with enough variety across the season to be worth visiting again and again.

The Limay River lies between 10 and 50 miles from Bariloche, depending on the section we fish. Travel time is typically under an hour. We meet around 7:30 AM at a designated point in Bariloche before setting off for the river.

Once the boat and gear are ready, we fish from about 8:30 AM until 12:30 PM, when we break for a well-deserved riverside meal. After lunch, we return to the water and fish until around 4:00–5:00 PM, before heading back to your accommodation or meeting point.

All meals and refreshments for a comfortable trip are included. Unless you request otherwise, we offer beer, coke, and water for beverages, plus snacks throughout the day. For lunch, we stop and set up a nice table: while you enjoy some sides, we grill Argentine steak, served with a fine Malbec. Before we hit the water again, we finish with dessert.
