The Limay River begins at Nahuel Huapi Lake, marking the start of the main Atlantic basin within Nahuel Huapi National Park. Flowing through the province of Río Negro, it serves as the natural border with Neuquén for much of its course. The Upper Limay stretches about 36 miles, from Nahuel Huapi Lake to the Alicurá Reservoir. From there, it continues downstream through four additional reservoirs before eventually reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

This river is world-renowned for its migratory brown trout, which migrate from the lake toward the river during their spawning run in the Argentine fall, rewarding persistent anglers with fish that can exceed 25 inches and 6 pounds.

It lies at the transition between forest and steppe, creating a striking and diverse landscape. The name Limay means “clear water” in the language of the region’s original inhabitants — an apt description for its crystalline flows.

This is a large river, carrying anywhere between 2,000 and 10,000 cubic feet per second, depending on the stage of the season. Despite its size, the Limay maintains a relatively gentle gradient. Along its course, it splits into multiple channels, forming islands, riffles, long runs, and broad pools typical of a river of this scale. The banks alternate between lush vegetation and dramatic sand cliffs, offering abundant holding water for trout. With its remarkable clarity, anglers can often watch trout move through the water to intercept their fly.

Each day, we float about 10 miles along one of the region’s most renowned rivers, fishing prime waters at the best times of day — from sunrise to sunset. After a full day on the river, you’ll arrive at camp to enjoy fine wines, cocktails, and a hearty dinner by the fire.

Accommodation on the Upper Limay River

We camp in the wild, at carefully selected backcountry sites chosen for their comfort, shelter, and river access. Accommodation is in spacious, private tents outfitted with NRS cots, air mattresses, warm sleeping bags, pillows, and side tables. To ensure maximum comfort, we usually host just two guests in each four-person tent. Dedicated dining and kitchen tents guarantee a comfortable experience in all weather conditions. Our cargo boys move ahead each day to strike camp, transport gear, and rebuild the full setup at the next site — so everything is ready and waiting when you come off the water.
