Rio Manso Lodge sits within Argentina’s oldest and largest national park, on the forested shore of Lago Hess, with views across the water toward Monte Tronador on clear days. The lodge offers comfortable rooms with private baths, a river-stone fireplace lounge, and a relaxed, intimate atmosphere — despite its remote feel, it’s less than two hours from the Bariloche airport, making it one of the easiest true wilderness lodges in Patagonia to reach.

The fishing here is built around a tight drainage of glacial lakes — Hess, Fonck, and Roca among the most productive — connected by short, wadeable outlet rivers, all within twenty minutes of the lodge. Waters run exceptionally clear, often with visibility past thirty feet, and hold strong populations of wild brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Much of the fishing is done from skiffs working creek mouths, bays, and weedbeds, with wading opportunities where the rivers narrow. Because hatches on the Manso system tend to be sporadic, streamers and sinking lines account for many of the largest fish. The season runs November through April, with early summer bringing higher water and stronger dry-fly activity building through December and January.

Non-anglers have plenty to fill their days with, from hiking trails through native forest to simply taking in the park’s scenery from the lodge itself.

As at our other lodges, each day’s water is chosen in the morning based on conditions — wind, light, and which lake or outlet is fishing best that day — rather than a fixed rotation.
Day 1 — Arrival & First Water
Transfer from Bariloche (approx. 90 minutes) into Nahuel Huapi National Park. Depending on arrival time, an afternoon session on Lago Hess right in front of the lodge to settle in.
Days 2–6 — Fishing the National Park
Each morning opens with a read of conditions before choosing the day’s water:
•Calm, clear mornings → skiff fishing the bays and weedbeds of Lago Hess or Lago Roca, sight-casting to cruising browns and rainbows.
•Sporadic or absent hatches → streamer work with sinking lines through the outlet rivers, where the biggest fish in the system tend to hold.
•Wanting more intimate water → a short walk to fish the narrow, wadeable stretches connecting the lakes.
•A change of pace → a session on Lago Fonck, a short transfer away, for a different look and less-pressured fish.
Afternoons return to the lodge for a relaxed lunch, time by the fire, or a hike through the surrounding forest.
Final Day — Departure
A closing session on Lago Hess where timing allows, then transfer back to Bariloche for onward travel.

Dining is treated with the same care as the fishing itself. Full-time chefs craft a gourmet menu rooted in Argentine and Patagonian culinary tradition, drawing on regional specialties, prime cuts of beef, house-made pastas, and an outstanding selection of Argentine wines. Every meal is designed to complement the rhythm of the day on the water, turning each stay into a true culinary journey through the flavors of Northern Patagonia.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily, along with a light afternoon tea or snack timed to fit around the day’s fishing — whether that means an early bite before an early start or a relaxed spread waiting back at the lodge after a long afternoon on the river. Guests can look forward to everything from a traditional Patagonian asado to refined multi-course dinners, always paired with attentive service and a genuine sense of hospitality.

No worries—we provide everything you need. All equipment is included and tailored to the waters you’ll be fishing, including rods, reels, lines, and flies.

Not at all. Our guides love introducing newcomers to this fascinating sport and will do their best to help you land your first trout on your very first fly-fishing experience. Alternatively, most of the waters we fish are also suitable for conventional spinning gear.

Absolutely. We’re happy to adapt meals to your dietary needs. Just let us know about any preferences or restrictions in advance, and we’ll make sure you enjoy the food as much as the scenery and the fishing.
