The close of the season on the Limay River is marked by one of Patagonia’s most anticipated events: the autumn run of brown trout. These powerful fish leave the vast Nahuel Huapi Lake and move into the Limay to spawn. During this time, every angler’s attention in Bariloche and the surrounding region turns to the river, joined by visitors from across Argentina and around the world — all chasing the same dream: hooking one of these legendary giants.

Fishing the Limay at this stage is truly unique, not only because of the trout themselves but also because of the atmosphere that surrounds the river. Days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and cold mornings often blanket the water in a mysterious veil of steam. Nothing comes easy here. Success requires precision and lots of patience— the right gear, the right fly, and above all, the perfect presentation.

There are two main approaches: pounding the banks and river structures with big, heavy flies, or swinging flies through deep runs and pools. It’s a demanding style of fishing, but with patience and perseverance, these days often deliver personal records and unforgettable battles. The takes are fierce, and the fights that follow are nothing short of extraordinary.
